AFD Salutes Its Volunteers

Ruth Wootten was an AFD volunteer when it was first organized 26 years ago.  She developed the policies and systems that are the backbone of Advocates' success.  She has a Master of Social Work degree.  She became a staff member and was known for her unselfish devotion to helping disadvantaged people.  She applied all her skill and knowledge to ensuring quality service to her clients.  Clients lives were stabilized because she helped them survive until benefits were awarded.  Her work has improved the quality of life of her clients and has been an inspiration to other social workers.  She coauthored a book entitled "CHALLENGES AND REWARDS" which encourages social workers and improves their skills.

Ruth retired in 1994 after 27 years at AFD but only from her full itme job.  Since that time she has been a volunteer giving us a day in the office and a day at home (weekly) still improving the lives of her clients.

Jack Dow is a CPA and has been a volunteer at AFD since June bringing with him a variety of financial and management skills.  Jack's impressive resume includes his work as Vice President Finance/CFO at USF Bestway, Inc. in Scottsdale and Vice President of Finance and Administration at the Arizona Humane Society of Phoenix.  In 2005, Jack suffered a stroke.  While he still has a few physical problems he has brought years of accounting management experience and strong analytical and communication skills to AFD at a time when they are sorely needed.  Jack believes his volunteer work at AFD helps in his recovery, and we hope that is so, but his contribution to AFD is of great help to our organization.

Samantha Morse is a senior at Ironwood High School.  This summer she volunteered full time as our receptionist.  This bright energetic young lady is a fast learner and soon was handling many administrative tasks and helping other staff members work with clients.  She returned to high school this fall and plays on their varsity volleyball team.  When that season is over, she will be back at AFD assisting staff and making a needed contribution to our organization.

Ken Evans came to AFD as a volunteer through AARP's Title 5 program.  Ken has techincal training that he used in his work in industrial engineering, construction, warehouse management and industrial office management.  He began his work with AFD as an RPP support assistant helping case managers with clients registered in the RPP program.  He caught on quickly and had terrific rapport with clients and was invited to become a full member of the staff.  Ken now works full time as an assistant case manager.
